49: Yannick Florest & Educating through Hip Hop

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Yannick Florest is an educator, teacher, and a rapper. Yannick has been educating in the New York area for his entire adulthood, and has taken much of what he has learned throughout the last decade or so and has put it into his music through the avenue of hip hop. Yannick has an incredible flow, brilliant messages, and some wonderful autobiographical flourishes that makes his art feel that much more personal as it is enjoyable.

Craig and Yannick met up in Brooklyn, NY a couple weeks ago to, well, meet for the first time, and to chat about life, education, anime, and hip-hop, all while in the confines of a somewhat still lobby of a Brooklyn Marriott. The two dig into the challenges of being truly authentic with students, how peers can perceive that authenticity, and the value of being a creative person within education - and how we let it out and let loose! This was such a lively conversation and we hope you love it too!

48: Hannah Liuzzo (Lilith) & Musical Mentorship

Hannah Liuzzo is the guitarist and vocalist in the Boston-based band, Lilith. Liuzzo is also a music teacher, mentor, and purveyor of musical instruments. This conversation centers on the lessons learned while educating the generation of musicians, while also discussing ways to make scenes more inclusive to femme musicians and how to get men to take up less space and listen. Hannah and Craig chilled out on Craig and Katy's back porch for this relaxed conversation between two new music nerds who became quick friends.

You also get to hear tunes from Lilith's latest cassingle, which features the tracks, "I'll Come Over," and "In Real Life." You get to hear both of these tracks, as well as a bit of history behind the creation of the band and how it was truly spawned out of boredom.

46: Corinne Chun - Hawaiian Education & Teach for America

WELCOME TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Corinne Chun is an educator, a Teach for America alum, and an Oregon State Beaver! Craig and Corinne get to catch up after a few years of being separated by oceans and life so talk about the world of education from the perspective of someone who grew up in Hawaii. Corinne chronicles her early days coming up through the education system on the island, while discussing the motivations to experience college on the mainland - at Oregon State University, where the two were RAs together!

Corinne is also an alum of the Teach for America program, which gives people the opportunity to build a more equitable future through educating students in high-risk communities. While most folks enter the program from carious fields - often not from an education background, Corinne DID have an education background and teaching certification already. After all, Craig and Corinne went through the same Education Double-Degree program at Oregon State together, so they had many classes together and on this episode, they definitely reminisce about those days.

There's a lot to learn in this episode! Enjoy!

10: Dillon Nettles & Modern Segregation

WELCOME BACK TO THE EDUPUNX PODCAST

Dillon Nettles is the Community Programs Director for the Montgomery Education Foundation (MEF) in Montgomery, Alabama. Dillon has lived in the south his entire life, and the timing of the heinous, racist, and bigoted events this weekend in Charlottesville, he shares his thoughts with me!

We also dig into his work at the MEF and what got him into the education field, as well as what keeps him doing this work in spite of the various systems of racialized oppression and segregation that still exist and persist in America in 2017. This is a fascinating conversation and I am so excited to share it with you all.
